Rooftop Cinema
LowKey Horror Movie Night
This year’s Madani IFF will present rooftop cinema, lowkey films with horror themes and religious nuances entitled LowKey Horror Movie Night. Films from Kolong Sinema Azabku Azabmu and Kuburan Berjalan by Azzam and Dekka, Bale Films, Bungkeuleukan by Agung Jarkasih, and Riza Pahlevi’s films, Makmum and Astagfirullah produced by HRV Production.
These independent films are widely spreading, the variety also varies, we can call them Indie films, B-movies, low-budget, cinema genres or subgenres. Its fans are increasing day by day, both filmmakers and audiences, as well as platforms, festivals and networks both locally and internationally.
The meaning of these low-budget films are films with crazy ideas but have limitations such as technical, funding or skill, but these films deliberately and proudly show the amateurish nature of their characters. For them, limited funds are not an obstacle to being creative. The Indonesian film industry cannot be separated from the contribution of films of this genre. Horror films are the most popular genre for this low-budget film, for example local horror films from the 80s or 90s to the works of Nayato Fio Nuala, who are their role model.
